Yes, Virginia, there are Methodists in Mississippi -- and California Methodists are heading south to join them. Teams from all over the country have worked to rebuild Mississippi in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Now we're joining hands to help, too.
On Saturday, April 14, the Los Angeles District of the United Methodist Church will fly 20 volunteers to New Orleans, where they'll make their way to Katrina's "ground zero": Waveland, Mississippi...

T-minus 58 hours and counting until departure from LAX. At the going rate, in that 58 hours I expect at least 12 more emails from our great leader, Mark Stephenson, on such critical matters as whether or not the camp has enough bug spray, or asking if I sleepwalk, hum at inappropriate times, will eat spinach, or have any other strange personal quirks (I'll eat anything except rutabagas, turnips, and brussel sprouts, for the record.) Actually, the bug spray thing is pretty important, as I hear the mosquitos in Mississippi sometimes carry away small dogs.
Long day of travel on Saturday, flying into New Orleans, then driving in 2 vans to Waveland. I think I get to drive one of the vans, so I can pretend to be a Greyhound bus driver, which has always been a dream of mine. Everytime we leave from a pitstop, I'm going to yell "all aboard!" We arrive in Waveland late on Saturday night.
In 46 years of being Methodist, I've never really been on a mission trip. I'm blown away that the Hollywood UMC congregation gave $10,000 to support the trip. Big hearts there. It's a privilege to represent their love to the people of Mississippi.

I wanted everyone to know that my local Methodist Church in Alveston, Bristol, England is supporting us in our mission. It is a small church but they have given $200.00 towards the trip.
It is hard sometimes for the British to understand that there should be such poverty in America. 'A country that has such wealth' many Brits would say. And yet I have been horrified (as I know many Americans are) at some of the poverty I have seen here. America is a rich, Christian country but many Americans have no medical care and sometimes extremely poor education. And in the case of Mississippi many are still homeless a year after the hurricane. Such wealth and yet such poverty. Not the image the American media likes to present to the rest of the world!
I really want to thank my little country church in Britain for understanding this crisis and for trusting and supporting me on this mission. I feel truly blessed.

Our whole family is so proud to have John representing us. We are from Houston originally. John is familiar with where he is going.

And they're off!
Everyone arrived at LAX early and got through security and more security. Interesting rumor that Mark Stephenson was the only team member who didn't go through a secondary screening.......
We have a great, great LAD team heading to Mississippi. You all will be in our constant thoughts and prayers. And we can't wait to hear/read your stories and see pictures!
If I can figure out how, I'll post the Hollywood UMC team t-shirt design.
love and blessings,
Kathy
